Christmas is the holiday that counts everyone. That's what makes it hard.
The stocking that doesn't get hung. The bowl that isn't by the back door anymore. The photo where everyone stands in the same order as last year, minus one. If someone you love is facing their first Christmas without their dog or cat, you have probably already noticed that they've gone quiet about the holidays — and you have probably already started wondering what to give someone who lost a pet this year without making it worse.
This isn't a gift list. It's a guide to not getting it wrong.
When a pet dies, there's a short window where everyone shows up. Texts, casseroles, a card from the vet's office. Then, usually inside of two weeks, the world goes back to normal — and your friend doesn't.
Christmas is the second wave, and almost nobody braces for it. Grief attaches itself to rituals, and the holidays are made almost entirely of rituals: the same decorations out of the same box, the same drive, the same people in the same room. Every one of them has a small hole in it now, in a shape only your friend can see.
That changes what a gift is for. In December you're not really offering comfort — comfort isn't on the table yet. You're saying something much simpler: I know. I remember them too. They still count.
That's the whole assignment. Everything below is just a different way of saying it. (If you're also searching for the words to go alongside it, we wrote a separate guide on what to say when someone loses a pet.)
Gifts that tend to land:
And gifts that quietly hurt — almost always given with real love:
If you want a wider view of the keepsake side of this, our guide to pet memorial keepsakes goes deeper.
Every custom memorial piece starts with the same uncomfortable moment: opening the camera roll.
Choosing a photo of a pet who is still here is fun. Choosing one of a pet who isn't is an hour you didn't plan for. You'll find forty near-identical pictures of them asleep and not one clean shot of their face. That isn't a failure on your part — it's just what loving an animal looks like in a photo library.
A few honest things we've learned from doing this every day:
And here's the part that matters most when you're buying this for someone else: you see it before it's made. A real person looks at your photos, and we send you a free 3D preview of the piece. If the face isn't right — and with a memorial piece, the face is the entire thing — you tell us and we adjust it. Nothing is printed, sanded or painted until you've said yes.
Two practical notes. First, order it yourself and hand it over in person; a memorial gift shouldn't land on a grieving person's doorstep with no warning. Second, leave a note on the order telling us it's a memorial piece — our painters take extra care with the markings that matter, and there are no marketing follow-ups afterward. Just the piece.
If you're unsure whether the photos you have will work, ask us first — we'll tell you honestly before you spend anything. Our photo guide shows what a workable picture looks like, and we go into more detail in how to pick the perfect photo.
You're allowed to buy it for yourself.
There's an unspoken rule that memorial things are supposed to arrive as gifts — that wanting one for your own dog or your own cat is somehow self-indulgent. It isn't. If you've read this far for your own pet, consider this the permission you shouldn't have needed to ask for. Get the piece. Put it somewhere you'll see it in the morning.
A good gift doesn't fill it. It just sets something warm down next to it, and proves your friend isn't the only one who noticed who's missing.
If you'd like us to make one, start with the photo you can't bring yourself to delete — you can begin a custom pet figurine from a single favorite picture. 🐾
